Become a Foster Parent!

Blistered Whiskers, Inc. relies heavily on Foster parents to assist in the care and socialization of kittens entrusted into our care.    Foster parents provide short and long-term care for kittens and nursing moms in their homes. By committing your time, love and attention, you prepare your foster cat or kitten for adoption into a permanent, loving home.

There are a lot of reasons...why people think they can’t foster such as:
I DON’T HAVE THE SPACE: Do you have a spare bedroom, office or bathroom? Children often love to offer a spot in their room to help save the lives of kittens...!!! You only need room for a cage and we will loan that to you...!!!
I MIGHT GET ATTACHED: OK, you might, but knowing that you are saving a life does make it easier...!!! When you take in a litter or even one kitten/cat it gives us room to help others so they don’t go to a kill shelter. And being in a home environment gives kittens a much easier time adjusting when they get adopted.
I CAN’T AFFORD TO HELP OUT: That one is easy, we will supply you with everything you need and if you do purchase items yourself you can use the receipts for a tax deduction...!!!
SOMEONE ELSE WILL SAY YES: They won’t and they don’t, we never have enough foster homes to save as many kittens as we would like each year.
A SHELTER KITTEN/CAT MIGHT GET MY CATS SICK: If you follow basic health protocols, such as washing your hands and wearing a different shirt when handling the kittens you shouldn’t have any problems. Also we will provide you with disinfectant to use.
MY OWN CATS WON’T TOLERATE ANOTHER CAT IN THE HOUSE: Yes, your cat will know there is another cat in the house, but they usually get over it pretty quickly, especially if they never see each other and you give your kitty plenty of attention.
Volunteering with us can be a GREATLY REWARDING experience. YOU can make a difference in the lives of these needy kittens...!!! If you would like more information regarding volunteering with us please visit our web site BlisteredWhiskers.org for a full list of opportunities.

Foster Care Parent Responsibilities:

These kittens will be in your care for as little as a few days or as long as several months, until they are ready to be placed for adoption.  It is important that you are committed to the work involved and which includes:

Provide daily care, feeding and any necessary medications

Socialize cats/kittens and give them plenty of TLC.

Provide transportation to and from your home for medical appointments.

How Foster Care Works:

1. Blistered Whiskers receives cats/kittens to be placed in our adoption program.

2. Foster homes are contacted when we have a cat or kitten needing placement to see if you have availability.

3. The cats/kittens go to the foster home until they are ready for adoption.

4. Once your cats/kittens have recovered from their spay/neuter surgery and are deemed healthy, they are ready to find forever homes.

 Fostering Challenges:

Fostering involves the entire family, not just the person who signed on for the task.

Fostering can lead to sleepless nights and hours of anxiety over the health and well-being of babies.

Fostering takes up a lot of time depending on the age of the kittens involved.

It can also be heart wrenching to say goodbye to your babies when they are ready for adoption, BUT, fostering can be THE MOST rewarding and fulfilling thing a cat lover will ever do to support our rescue kittens!
